Dear Asa and comrades at Electronic Intifada- I have listened every day to your livestream as I renovate a small house in Kansas City, shedding tears into my paint bucket, heartbroken and enraged. When I drive my car to the overflowing hardware store, NPR is a marvel of inconsequential blather. Neighbors and family seem completely oblivious to this monstrous genocide, and become hostile and defensive when the subject is broached. I am deeply ashamed of this country where I was born. Most people here are in such deep denial, sleepwalking through life, whining about the most petty things. They don't want their day wrecked. I pity them. I embrace this pain, and this guilt. This little house is become a palace. This glass of water is delicious. My dog and I are warm, and the air is filled with chirping crickets, not bombs and shrieks of pain and terror. I feel a rich and fabulous gratitude with each breath of sweet air, vibrantly aware that it is not my birthright, not my just deserts, but simply the luck of the draw. It is the most terrible and ironic gift you have given me, my friends. Be assured - Americans have a grave reckoning ahead.
